Brick-making for beginners

Today, JT and I spent some time with a family learning how to make bricks. Believe it or not, this is part of my job! The better we understand the daily lives of our patients, the better we can help them to maximise their function.

Making bricks reminds me of making sand-castles or mud-pies as a child! Unfortunately making bricks involves getting your hands covered in runny fresh cow dung, as dung stops the mud from sticking to the mould. JT and I managed to make some pretty good looking bricks - although we did take much longer than the locals!

My unfamous blog

I'm in Cape Town and i've been taking advantage of the luxury of having a DVD rental shop down the road. What else can u do in cold, wet weather anyway?! So, i watched the movie "Julie and Julia" yesterday. For anyone who hasn't seen it, it's about a bored 29 year-old girl called Julie who admires the famous cook Julia Child. Julie decides to cook every one of Julia's 500 and something recipes in a year, and blog about it. For some reason, her blog becomes famous. And this is not just a movie, it's a true story.

I enjoyed watching a movie about blogging (and cooking - it also inspired me to cook, but i still think blogging is more interesting). She makes it look so easy to get famous from blogging - it's not true! I am a very unfamous blogger. But i love it all the same, and will continue to write for the sake of my handful of readers - but mostly for myself :)

Madiba Mission

This running race through the Transkei began last year. The idea is that it starts at Mandela's house and follows the route he took as a child to his closest clinic at Miller mission station. Last year, security outside Mandela's house were not so happy with the race starting there, so this year it began a few kilometers away. The 32 kilometer route can be run by individuals or as a team. The plan for the Zithulele gang was to have two teams with people doing increments of 4 kms. JT and Kate started off for us, planning to do 16kms, but ended up doing the whole thing! So the others (Megan, Joff, Jo, Asanda and Sam) just slotted in when they felt like it - all very chilled. I didn't run because i volunteered to head up the support team. So i drove the route taking photos, cheering them on and stopping every 4 kms to make sure the runners were getting water. Karen the determined cyclist rode the route on her bike.

Sam was thrilled to drive JT's car. Below is the church were the clinic Mandela visited was held. Although accessibility to health care has improved a lot since his childhood, there is still a long way to go.

The champions! (minus Karen)

Epic fail

An epic fail of a home visit for JT and me. Found the patient's house after much driving around, asking for directions and U-turning. But, no-one home.
So, we made the best of the situation and took a leisurely drive home enjoying the most beautiful Transkei sunset i've ever seen.

At last: my first piece of Transkei art

In honour of Kim and Pete's wedding, I produced a little piece of the Transkei for them. Step one in my much procrastinated mission of Transkei inspired art.

My first ever visitors!

Congratulations Mel and Max for winning this title! Thank you for making me part of your road trip.
Our adventures included an awesome day at Hole-in-the-Wall and a trip to legendary Papazella's Pizza.
