The joys of living with a doctor

The other day, i was looking for something and this is what i found when i opened Liz's fridge:

Talk about taking work home with you!

Party on the beach

In celebration of Roger's birthday, we all headed down to Lubanzi beach for a game of soccer and some tea and cake.

Sam, Kayleigh and I walked down together. We had an interesting discussion about how to turn their near-death experience into a movie called "The Cliff". It was quite tricky deciding who was going to play who.

As we descended down the last hill to the beach, we were overtaken by a mad white man on a bike: Roger. Kate had also just arrived (running on the road) and also Liz (driving the Le Roux's car) and Karen (driving a bakkie-load of local kids).
We had a fun game of soccer on the beach - boys against girls. Except for Roger, all the boys were about 5 years old! Liz earned herself the nickname Suarez by wearing a light-blue jersey and committing a hand-ball foul! Sam discovered a hidden talent as goalie, Kayleigh and Karen were our strikers, and i had fun being defense - except when i was scared i'd hurt the little kids.
Towards the end of the soccer game, the remaining party-goers arrived. The Le Rouxs and Gaunts walked with their kids. I am very impressed with Emma (3) and Gracie (4) for walking the whole way (its about an hours walk).
In Roger's honour, all the girls wore side-ponies. Roj is obsessed with the 80s.

Time for tea and cake with shelter from the not-so-nice weather. Karen made a delicious carrot cake :)

Me and my family. aaaw

Feel it! It was here!

The soccer world cup has come and gone. If it hadn't been for some purposeful contact with civilization (e.g. going to Cape Town, finding somewhere to watch a TV), we might never have known it had happened.

Here are some of my best hits and memories:

Opening day was awesome! Fortunately, i had managed to get tickets to the first game in Cape Town which was on opening day, which meant i had to be in Cape Town for opening day. Sarah and Bernard were also heading to Cape Town, so we got up early and travelled to the airport together. East London airport always has a wonderful friendly vibe (probably because its so small), but the 11th of June was particularly enjoyable. Almost everyone in the airport was wearing Bafana Bafana gear and was super excited. There were people flying to Joburg for the opening ceremony and game and they were particularly excited and dressed up. And the usual sound of vuvuzelas was also present. Driving to the airport, there were children standing on the streets of East London blowing vuvuzelas. We managed to find the legendary Simon (Karl's brother) who I managed to meet after missing his previous visits to Zithulele and have a chat while we waited to board.
(To be continued...)

A weekend in civilization

I was very excited to hear about a one-day workshop in East London by a speech therapist for non-speech therapists on Feeding and Communication. Exactly what we have been struggling with (not actually having a speech therapist at Zithulele means us OTs and PTs have to do our best to fill in - if anyone reading this is a speech therapist, PLEASE come work with us!).

A trip to East London means a 4-hour drive and a whole weekend expedition, so i invited Kayleigh and Sam to come for the ride (Liz was in England). It turned into a pretty sweet road trippin awesome weekend!

Most of the ride there was spent playing hilarious games of i-spy and listing things. i-spy went something like this:
Lisa: I spy with my little eye something beginning with 'c'
(10 minutes and several guesses later...)
Sam: Can u see it now?
Lisa: Yes
(about 10 minutes and more guesses later...)
Lisa: do you want me to give a clue?
S & K: Yes
Lisa: It has a "sh" sound
Sam: I thought it started with a 'c'
Lisa: It does
(about 10 minutes later...)
Lisa: Do you want me to give you another clue?
S & K: Yes!
Lisa: Its a road sign
(about 10 minutes later...)
Lisa: ok, look, its those things in front of us!
Sam: sharrows?
Lisa: No!
(5 minutes later...)
Lisa: There they are: right in front of us!
Sam: sharrows!
Lisa: No!
S & K: i don't know what they are called!
Lisa: CHEVRONS!

The next game of i-spy went something like this: (excuse the inacurrate recording)
Sam: I spy with my little eye something beginning with 'd'
Lisa: Dirt road?
Sam: No. its one word.
Kayleigh: Disused railway?
Sam: No, its one word!
Kayleigh: Delapadated building?
Sam: NO, ITS ONE WORD!
(etc. etc. 5 minutes later...)
Kayleigh: Is it inside or outside the car?
Sam: Inside
Lisa: Dust?!
Sam: Yes!
Lisa: I'm insulted!!!! There's more dust outside my car than inside!

I-spy was followed by a game of "Name x number of x's". Some of the topics included: animals not found in the Transkei, Star Wars characters, American presidents, names of trees (not fruit trees), types of shoes, full names of characters on Grey's, minor Friends characters, tracks on the Grammy Nominees CD, people who worked at Zithulele before our time etc.etc. Particularly amusing was Sam trying "Name 20 foreign currencies". Unfortunately "Canadian money" "Australian money" and the likes don't count!

Liz loves this picture

Pharmacy news

We were all super stoked and relieved to welcome Bonga (a pharmacist) to Zithulele. Unfortunately, Bonga got more than she bargained for, and left after 2 or 3 weeks. And Kayleigh had to pick up the pieces - as usual.

But we have an awesome God who provides for us and has brought us a new pharmacist. Kayleigh did a big cleanup in his honour (see picture). Welcome to Zithulele, Ian !

Birthday vibes

This is the story of my birthday :)

I woke up to find Liz up before me, which doesn't happen very often. She was making us an awesome breakfast of English muffins, Woolies juice and those yoghurts i loved as a kid with the flavour separate at the bottom and you have to mix it in yourself.

After our awesome breakfast, i was the last in the therapy team to get to work, so i walked in to an enthusiastic rendition of happy birthday. Joff and Megan (awesome British couple who were here for 3 months) were leaving Zithulele that day - fantastic birthday present :( , so they popped into the department for some happy birthday and goodbye hugs :(

The rest of the working day was nothing special - actually, it was one of the worst days i'd had for a while. One of those days where there's just too much going on and you spend the whole day running around like crazy feeling like you're not coping and nothing is working. I was also just really exhausted from our great trip to East London the previous weekend, and just wanted to go to sleep and cancel any celebrations.

So after a few minutes to myself i felt a bit better and started rounding up the troops for The Great Zithulele Treasure Hunt which Kayleigh and Sam and I had dreamed up on Saturday night at Cintsa. We got enough players for 3 teams of about 6-8 people each. Kayleigh gave us brief instructions and we were off. By the way, Kayleigh and Sam did the clues, so i had no idea where they were. Unfortunately, we overlooked the fact that it would be cold and dark and require a lot of running around, so before long, i had lost my team mates, some of the clues had gone missing and everyone was running around slightly confused, but still super amped.

Liz getting into the spirit of the game and running down the street with Karl chasing her:
After we figured out that everyone had been to every clue, we all reconvened at our place for tea and cake and trying to solve the treasure hunt puzzle. Every clue had a letter on, so you have to put all the letters together to spell the winning word. The letters were (not in order, see if you can figure it out): B, A, B, J, T, H, A, T, H, U, E. Roger was first to get it.

We tried to eat chocolate cake without plates - epic fail. It felt like there were people and cake everywhere. Here's Emma in her party dress (for my honour) covered in cake. Unforunately, the photo doesn't quite capture how much cake she had on her.

Liz was entertaining the crowds with pictures from Kim and Pete's wedding that she went to in England.

After the crowds had gone, i opened some prezzies yay:) Here is my picture from Josh (5 years old) which i love.

Liz gave me a choice of what i wanted for dinner and i chose her amazing lasagna. So Kayleigh, Sam, Liz and I had a late dinner and that was pretty much the end of the day.

Thank you to Liz (for making me 3 awesome meals) and Kayleigh and Sam (for the treasure hunt and) for making it special. xxx
